Three for the night

So, I have to listen to music at night in order to go to sleep. Some people have fans, (i do), some people have televisions on in the background, some people have certain positions... I have music to listen to. So, unfortunately, in a very OCD way, I make "lua mixes" to sleep to. Yeah. Shut up. Anyways, here are a random three from the current mix. (they change about every two weeks)

Where I End and You Begin by Radiohead - Yeah, it's got that midnight feel to it. It's dream-like itself. Though "pyramid song" is always a close second to it.

A Movie Script Ending by Death Cab for Cutie - Errbody seems to love Death Cab, especially since that OC episode or something. Anyways, anyone know if "Plans" is any good?

Mad World by Gary Jules - From that talking bunny movie or something. Just kidding. Donnie Darko soundtrack pick.

Fade Together by Franz Ferdinand
- Yes, lately, I've been spinning "You Could Have it So Much Better". I really really really like it for some reason. Yes, i know it's a LOT like the last album. Yes, I know that it's sometimes a bit too jangly. But I don't care. It's great. And here is one of the three or four quiet numbers.

Colors

Here's a happy little 60's song from some hippy named Donovan.

Colours by Donovan

Blue's the colour of the sky-y,
In the morning, when we rise,
In the morning, when we rise.
That's the time, that's the time,
I love the best.

Mellow is the feeling that I get,
When I see her, m-hmm,
When I see her, oh yeah.
That's the time, that's the time,
I love the best.

Songs of the Day

Theme? Ugly Casanova. A side project of sorts, had a pretty damn good cd called Sharpen your Teeth. Also, for some reason, this song really feels like Autumn or fall or something. Like, they encased the season, man. Anyone else get that vibe?

Hotcha Girls by Ugly Casanova

Smells like autumn, smells like leaves;
you don't know that you'll rust and not belong so much
and then get left alone

Suck it up, take a ride and take a walk
and don't you know that old folks' homes smell so much like my own

The hotcha girls at the palisades,
dime store keets, pretty birds, pretty mouths
Mama's little truck stop rose, her dancy feet her happy laugh.
We were dropping dimes on the ponies in the cul-de-sac,
casting shadows throwing sparks
We left our teeth marks on the barrel of the gun,
the clipper ship across your chest
Turns out the pony only had one trick, a wink for the truck stop boys.
They learned it all from the polaroids

Smells like autumn smells like leaves,
you don't know that you'll rust and not belong so much
and then get left alone

Suck it up, take a ride and take a walk
and don't you know that old folks' homes smell so much like my own
Time blends light, paint's all peeling, wait outside, take four rights

The hotcha girls in the palisades
dime store keets, pretty birds, pretty mouths
Glass eyes and the wooden teeth,
the engine's rusting in deep deep sleep, it waits
The mail came from miles away, the postal man was always late,
and we wait and we wait

Tight lipped with a big ol mouth,
The government workers all headed south while it rained
Glassy eyes and wooden teeth, the engine rusted in deep deep sleep
it waits, and it waits, to awake.

Around town

Who do you think made the blogger's top 40 in American music right now?

------------------------------
Thank you 3hive. I love your free and legal music love. This week's post on The Rosebuds made me smile.

------------------------------
Songs for a sunday like today:
Mr. Ambulance Driver by The Flaming Lips (beautiful. highly recommended)

Touch Me by the Doors

Section 14 (Two Thousand Places) by The Polyphonic Spree (you know, a lot of there music sounds like this. But it's like the angel's choir of sunshine in your ears with a happy melody. so i post it.)

Southern Belles in London Sing by The Faint (techno groove, but not really. You'll see)

Only in Dreams by Weezer (remember when the Blue Album was god's gift to us? it still is. and this is the best closer for an album evar.)

When tuesday gets here, buy me this please.

Could it get any crazier?

So, yeah, thanks to a little site called regnyouth, (much love to them) I reconnected with King Crimson. I finally, finally, finally got the digital version of In "The Court with the Crimson King". Oh yeah. It's psychedelic. It's epic. It's great, man. The nearest comparison I can think of is the stretching soundscapes of Pink Floyd, with more flute. Yeah, I just used the word "soundscape". This music, well man, you just listen to it. Oh, and it has the best cover artwork ever.

Funny story? I procured this vinyl from my friend's dad, who proclaimed, "it was so fucking great back in the day. I "played 21st Century Schizoid Man" so loud it could shake beer cups off the table man." Now he's an accountant.

King Crimson - Epitaph

Almost 10 minutes of greatness.

------------------------------------------------

In other news, found a pretty good interview with my author of the moment, Bret Easton Ellis. I gotta tell you man, this guy knows desperation and depravity. I love it!

Oh so comfortably numb

These past few days have been mired with a cold catching to me and have been really tire lately. Apathy has reached a new high. Lots of laying around watching movies and trying to finish American Psycho by Bret Ellis (the most depraved, yet skillful novel I've read in a long time) So, here's to fall!

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Joe Cocker - Right, so I was blown away by the mexicano remake that was played in Kill Bill. Then, my perception of the song was blown away again at the end of Layer Cake. (best ending... ever?) Wow. In the running for the best blues song, and the first twelve seconds are perhaps the best opening seconds in a song. Ever.

Son's Gonna Rise by Citizen Cope - Ghettooooo. I promise, ride around in your car to this, and you can imagine the morning. Or just "chillin" with your "boys".

Champagne Supernova by Oasis - Yes. Everybody has this song. Or atleast, they should. Mega-radio-hit from yester year! "Where were you while we were getting hiiiigh?"

All Tommorrow's Parties by Velvet Underground - Did I mention how much I fucking love the Velvet Underground? This album and "Loaded" are grrrreat!

Falling by the wayside...

People in Planes EP: Pretty good, Wind-Up records sent them my way. Five guys just doing what they love, making music. So check out this single and then there EP or their official site. Hurry, that song will only be up for about 4 to 5 days.

People in Planes - For Miles Around (Scratch to Void)

-----------------------------------------------------------

In other news, check out Big Bad Bit on the blog roll. And So... Where's Helsinki?? Go, now!

-----------------------------------------------------------

I recently got that Deerhoof album errbody is talking about, and yeah, I dig it. It's not the best thing in the world, but it's not horrible either. Also got the new Broken Social Scene one, well, atleast it's new to me, and I'm slowly absorbing it. I like the bigger sound.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Bright Eyes mix! Love me some Oberst, especially at his most depressing and heart-wrenching voice moments. These few are amazing, but I unfortunately got a torrent with no album specification, which really bums me out. Can anyone help a brotha out?

Bright Eyes - From a Balance Beam
Bright Eyes - Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh
Bright Eyes - Going for the Gold

From a Balance Beam

There is a man holding a megaphone, he must have been the voice of God
The bystanders claimed they saw angels flying up and down the block
Well, they must have been attached to wires
I'd seen one laying in the lawn with a broken arm, so I called 911
Well that's one less founded opinion
One more cause for a dispute
So the street filled, like a basin, up with cameras and their crews
And they washed away the rumors leaving just the concrete truth
It was a spectacle
No, I, I mean a miracle

So then I fell like that girl from a balance beam
A gymnasium of eyes all were holding on to me
I lifted one foot to cross the other and I felt myself slipping
It was a small mistake
Sometimes that is all it takes

Now I'm staring at my wrist, hoping that the time is right
When the planets will align
There will be no planets to align
Just the carcass of the sun
And little painted marbles spinning senseless through an endless black sky

It was in a foreign hotel's bathtub I baptized myself in change
And one by one I drowned all of the people I had been
I emerged to find the parallels were fewer
I was cleansed
I looked in the mirror
And someone new was there
But, I was as helpless as a chess piece when I was lifted up by someone's hand
And delivered from the corner my enemies had got me in
But in all of my salvation I still felt imprisoned inside that holding cell that is myself

So I wait for the day when I'll hear the key as it turns in the lock
And the guard will say to me, "Oh my patient prisoner you waited for this day and finally, you are free! You are free! You are freezing."
Now I'm staring at the sun, waiting for it to explode
Because a day is gonna come, don't know when but it will come
And we'll finally know the way out of here
And I'll throw away this wrinkled map
And my chart of stars and compass, cracked
And I'll climb that tree all wet with sap to avoid the hungry beasts below I'll cut out my lover's tongue and sing of a graveyard gray and a garden green
And we won't have to worry no more
No we won't have to wonder again
About how this song or story ends
About how this song and story will end

picture me rolling

Welcome back to our regularly scheduled program. So, I went to DC for a week and lurved it, got plenty of pictures that will go up on webshots eventually. If anyone cares.

Anyways, made a badassss road mix, because I drove up and wasn't going to listen to shitty radio stations on the way up. This is one of those laid back, on-the-road kinda mixes, something that you can just groooove to. Mostly classical rock, but what ev. If you've heard the songs before, that's the point. Comfortable songs to relax to, preferably with the roof down and sun up.

Tangerine by Led Zeppelin - The best song of theres that never got famous. The epitome of a driving soundtrack song.

For What it's Worth by Buffalo Springfield - Classic for a reason!

Anthem by Phantom Planet - I dig it. Don't hate.

We Are Your Car by Christopher Sullivan

The Weight by Band - Another quintessential sunny-day-riding tune.

Teenage Wasteland by The Who - Can't beat that synth/piano/crazy melody.

Exodus Damage by John Vanderslice - Really, I just can't get enough of this song. Much love for the Pixel Revolt CD.

California Stars by Billy Bragg and Wilco - Perfect twilight song, and has the right midwestern feel to compliment the vibe. Dig it?

It'll All Work out by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers - Used in Cameron Crowe's ode to Americana, Elizabethtown. Subtle love song, but so heartbreakingly honest.

-----------------------------------------------

In other news, Soft, who asked me to feature them once before, hath asked again. Their EP is out and they've gotta new single, "Higher". Check it out, you might like it. I think it's pretty damn good, they have a good sound and I am patiently waiting for a full album. Here's that EP for sale.

-----------------------------------------------

Here's another one, that really hit me out of nowhere. A guy named MESH has done some pretty fine mix-ups, in particular, Tears for Fears Mad World mixed with a funk/loud vibe. He's got an EP's worth, five songs where he meshes them together. Get it? Meshes? Damn, that's is clever. Check out his front page where you can get the link to the entire EP.

And I think that's all for now. Got the People in Planes EP and plan on posting links to that. Till then, ciao!

Hey, I'll be right back

I've got a business trip to attend to till Monday, and I won't have access to my music and a computer at the same time. Depressing, I know. So, I swear, I'll be back, just, in like 6 or 7 days. Atleast I get to skip school!

Oh, and by the way, throw this guy some love. He has a bunch of podcasts, cut up in fifteen minute episodes, talking to indie big names. Where else can you see a developing archive of indie kids, talking on a radio show no doubt? He's already chatted with The Polyphonic spree, Fruit Bats, The Decembrists, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! (an fav as of late) and is editing one up with LCD Soundsystem. Sounds like a good time and a good investment, so go there now! indieinterviews.com

And from everyone in DC, aloha!
